Gianni Infantino apologized to FIFA Council members during Thursday's meetings but offered nothing beyond the mea culpa. His critics wanted answers and documentation on unresolved issues facing the organization. They didn't get either.
This is classic Infantino damage control. He acknowledged problems to the people most capable of removing him from power, then gave them no substance to work with. No new details emerged. No documents got released. The Council members left with an apology and empty hands.
What remains unclear is whether this half-measure will satisfy the Council or deepen frustration. Infantino runs FIFA, but he doesn't run the Council. If enough members decide an apology without accountability isn't enough, pressure for real transparency could intensify. For now, though, he survived another round without committing to concrete action.
The bigger story is what Infantino avoided saying. That silence speaks louder than any apology.
