Alexander Volkanovski wants out on his own terms. The featherweight champion is proposing a superfight against lightweight champion Justin Gaethje as a "send-off" bout, signaling his readiness to step away from the sport.
Volkanovski has dominated featherweight for years, running through the division with few challengers left who excite him. A jump up to 155 pounds against Gaethje would give him one last marquee payday and a chance to cement his legacy against elite company outside his weight class. Gaethje, a legitimate lightweight contender, brings name recognition and a striking style that would make for compelling television.
The timing matters. Champions don't typically float retirement fights unless they're serious about walking away. Volkanovski isn't angling for another reign at 145. He's looking at the exit ramp and wants to leave with a win that matters.
UFC brass will need to decide if they greenlight it. Gaethje might welcome the opportunity. But superfights involving two active champs carry complications. Both men hold titles that UFC typically prefers to defend within their respective divisions. Stripping either fighter or holding up both belts creates headaches.
Still, if the money works and both fighters want it, this could happen. Volkanovski has earned the right to choose his final opponent.
