Sonay Kartal's first WTA 1000 final ended in disappointment Sunday at the Wuhan Open. Maja Chwalińska dominated the early going and closed out the match in straight sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Kartal came into the tournament riding momentum and playing some of her best tennis. She pushed through the draw and reached the final, putting herself in position for a breakthrough title. But Chwalińska controlled the tempo from the start, taking the first set decisively. Kartal fought back to steal the second set and keep herself alive in the match. That resistance didn't last. Chwalińska regrouped and sealed it in the third, denying Kartal what would have been a career-defining win at this level.

For Kartal, it's another near-miss at a title that matters. She'll have other chances, but these moments define a player's upward trajectory. Chwalińska, meanwhile, gets the biggest win of her career on one of the tour's bigger stages.
